You can build your own MortiSafe.

If you've built one, or if you have any questions or suggestions about these details, please mail me to let me know.

These details are a work in progress, I'm going to add some pictures and more details. Buy the parts

You need:

  1. A digital safe - see MortiSafe - Buying a digital safe
  2. A microcontroller board MortiSafe - Buying an Arduino
  3. Some other parts MortiSafe - Buying the other parts

Tools you will need include:

  1. A soldering iron
  2. Wire strippers
  3. Screwdriver for the safe's back panel

Building the safe

You need to:

  1. Download software to test the parts you have so far - see MortiSafe - Testing the Arduino
  2. Check out how to work the digital safe - see MortiSafe - Setting up the safe
  3. Make a cable and connector - see MortiSafe - Make the Arduino connector
  4. Modify the digital safe - see MortiSafe - Modify the safe
  5. Make the circuit board - see MortiSafe - Make the MOSFET board
  6. Test it all together - see MortiSafe - Test the MortiSafe
  7. Fitting the USB cable into the safe - see MortiSafe - Fit the USB cable

When finished it should look like this:

configured_small.jpg Using the software

If you're not using the website for some reason (although it doesn't exist yet!), you can use the supplied software instead to control the MortiSafe.

As Master:

  1. Download the software from here (but you don't need to do any of the other configuration listed in the instructions for building the safe)
  2. Run KeySafeController.exe
  3. Choose 'Master'
  4. Choose whether you want the sub to be locked for a limited time, or until you send them the unlock code
  5. If you're limiting the time, you can choose to hide the time limit from the sub
  6. Click on 'Generate the codes'
  7. Send the sub the 'lock' code
  8. Keep the 'unlock' code somewhere safe

As Sub:

  1. You must have already set up the software as in the instructions above
  2. Run KeySafeController.exe
  3. Choose 'Sub'
  4. Plug the MortiSafe into your PC USB port
  5. Put your keys into the safe and close it
  6. Put the lock code your Master sent you into the box
  7. Click the button
  8. Wait for the time to run out or for your Master to send you the unlock code
  9. If your Master sends you an unlock code, repeat the above instructions
 10. Once the safe is unlocked (by using the unlock code or after the specified time) you can use the combination to open the safe

If you are a solo user (both Master and Sub) just follow the instructions for Master and then for Sub.
